Children’s Department Head

The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library seeks a creative, flexible and reliable full time employee as Head of the Children’s Department. The Head will supervise full and part time staff in the department, as well as any volunteers; supervise and present programming for children ages 0-12; collection development (both ordering and weeding); establish partnerships with Bookmobile outreach, local schools and community organizations; public service in reference and reader advisory work; publicity of the department’s services and collections. They will attend monthly meetings of district librarians and children’s librarians; mentor new people in children’s services in district libraries; serve on MCLINC circulation users committee; establish relationships with schools and community organizations; attend regional and state workshops and meetings; serve on committees within library as requested. Weekly schedule will include day time and evening hours with Saturdays in rotation. Salary Range $51,000-$54,000, benefits available.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise 4 fulltime employees, 3 part time employees, and department volunteers. Plan and supervise the library’s story times and programs for babies, toddlers, and preschool children. Train and mentor other children’s room staff involved in program planning and presentation. Hold monthly staff meeting in the department.
  • Coordinate and present year-long story times for infants, toddlers and preschoolers; presents programming for school age children, including weekend and summer activities, book talks and field trips for school groups; coordinate and present Summer Reading Program and Science In the Summer Program.
  • Coordinate Preschool Outreach Services of the department; represent library at area fairs and community days; establish partnerships with schools throughout our service area and community organizations in the Norristown area; assist the Head of Outreach Services Department in Books-Go-Round service; arrange department attendance at township and municipal fairs; assist with Sneak Previews.
  • Oversee publicity efforts for the department, update children’s page of the website and social media; serves on social media committee.
  • Materials selection and overseeing materials selection activities of the department; order and maintain broad scope of materials for district use: books, reference, professional, periodicals, audiobooks, Spanish collection; promote collections through book lists and social media.
  • Oversees weeding of collection within the department; advises branch staff on weeding;
  • Manages special collections such as the Children’s Historical Collection and Carolyn Wicker Field Collection.
  • Manage themed and bibliotherapy booklists; supervise and provide reference and reader advisory service to children and their families.
  • Collects and reports monthly statistics; writes grants; orders supplies;
  • Oversees hardware and software in the department; serves as troubleshooter for hardware problems;
  • Attends monthly department heads meeting; serves on library committees as requested; attend District children’s librarians meeting; serves on social media committee.

Main Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science. Certification as Professional Librarian by PA Bureau of Teacher Certification
  • Must have at least 2-5 years public library experience as Youth Services Librarian, including 1 to 2 years at the supervisory level
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of youth-centered literature and best practices
  • Knowledge of professional library practices and understanding of the methods of applying them to public library children’s services
  • Grant writing experience preferred

Support Staff 2

The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library seeks a flexible and reliable part time employee to provide excellent customer service and technical support to the library community as part of its Computer Lab team. 19 hours per week including day time and evening hours, and Saturdays in rotation. This Support Staff 2 position is responsible for assisting the Electronic Resources Librarian (ERL) in the management and operation of the Computer Lab. In addition to functioning as the contact person in the absence of the ERL, key tasks are record keeping and instruction. Also, will be responsible for staffing the check-in desk of the Computer Lab when Support Staff or Volunteers are unavailable. Will assist Electronic Resources Support Staff, and Computer Lab volunteers. Will be familiar with other library departments and their functions as they relate to the operation of the Computer Lab.

Primary Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Staff the Computer Lab according to a schedule developed by the Electronic Resources Librarian including weekday and evening. There will be some Saturday hours, as needed.
  • Teach several computer classes on a 14-week calendar rotation.
  • Register users of the facilities according to established library procedures; provide new users with information about library policies and procedures, with special emphasis on the Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Provide one-on-one help to individual computer users. Monitor user’s activity to insure compliance with the library’s Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Collect usage statistics on a day-to-day basis.
  • Maintain and clean items such as computer desk and chair surfaces, mouse and keyboard equipment.
  • Assist the Electronic Resources Librarian during class sessions, as needed.
  • Responsible for all recordkeeping for the Computer Lab. This includes maintaining accounting records for Lab funds intake, as well as daily Computer Class payments, compiling Computer Lab usage statistics, handling all supplies inventory and ordering, and administering the Volunteer hours.
  • Develop class schedules and distribute as needed, maintain Computer Lab calendar, including staff meetings, class meetings, and other meetings as needed. This includes maintenance of meeting agendas and posting of the meeting notes.

Main Qualifications include, but not limited to:

  • Must have completed at least one academic year of post-secondary school education or possess at least 5-7 years previous work experience.
  • Thorough understanding of the operation of Windows computers and software programs is required. Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office package offerings of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher, and MS Access. To this degree should be able to instruct classes in these programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is essential, as is ability to interact pleasantly with general public and fellow library employees.
  • Must have valid PA driver’s license and ability to work at any of the library’s locations.

District Consultant Librarian (DCL)

Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library (MC-NPL) seeks a full time, exempt District Consultant Librarian (DCL). The DCL provides library consultant services to the staff, Boards, Friends groups, municipal officials and interested members of the public for the Montgomery County Library District. Coordinates services to public libraries throughout the district. M.L.S/M.L.I.S. from an ALA accredited college is required, plus 8-10 years of professional library experience including a minimum of five years in a supervisory or administrative capacity with a public library. Able to drive a vehicle and possess a valid point-free PA driver’s license, as well as own a car. The salary range for this position is $72,000-$76,000 DOE, benefits available.
