Library Support Staff I: Driver for Bookmobile & Outreach Department—Full Time

Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library’s Bookmobile & Outreach Department seeks a full-time employee to drive an extended cargo van countywide, packing, delivering, and retrieving materials between libraries and other locations. Monitors and fuels vehicles, reports needed repairs, performs minor preventive maintenance on vehicles, and cleans/washes interior and exterior of vehicles, as required. This position is full-time, 37 hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays in rotation. Employer-sponsored health insurance, generous paid time off, and other benefits included.

Must possess high school diploma or equivalent. Previous work experience of 0-4 years. Strong organizational skills, position involves heavy lifting—sometimes as much as 40 pounds—and standing for extended periods of time. Must possess good driving skills and ability to interact well with co-workers and staff members of client libraries. Position requires a valid, points-free PA driver’s license and the ability to work at any of the Library’s locations.

Library Support Staff II: Administration Office—Part Time

The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library seeks a flexible and reliable part-time employee to provide excellent support to the library community as part of its administrative team. This position’s schedule is fifteen hours per week, including daytime and occasional evening and Saturday hours. Some paid holidays are included.

This Support Staff II position is responsible for ordering and distributing supplies, performing inventory, taking and placing telephone calls, processing invoices, counting and recording cash received, routing mail, and, along with the Administrative Assistant, scheduling library meeting spaces, as well as execution of other clerical and administrative services for the Executive Director.

Must have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and be able to work at all locations. Must have completed at least one academic year of post-secondary school education or possess at least 5-7 years previous work experience. A thorough understanding of the operation of Windows computers and software programs is required. Must be proficient with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Publisher; proficiency with MS PowerPoint preferred.

Library Page: Circulation Department—Part Time

The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library seeks to fill a Library Page position. This position is part-time, 15-19 hours per pay week, including weekdays and evenings and Saturdays in rotation.

Job duties include, but are not limited to sorting and shelving library materials, emptying the book drops, moving carts and bins around the library, collecting mail, straightening shelves, and other related work as required.

Must be able to sort materials numerically and alphabetically. Must pay attention to details. Must have strong knowledge of the Dewey decimal system. Must be able to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions. No person under the age of 18 shall be employed without a general employment certificate issued by school authorities.

Executive Director and District Administrator

The Board of Directors of the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library (the Library) and the Montgomery County Public Library District seek its next Executive Director – an accomplished leader ready to enhance the Library’s role in a world that continues to change. The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a diverse service area of 311,000 people. The Executive Director is responsible for approximately 95 full- and part-time employees at the main library, four branches, and four bookmobiles. The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library is the District Center for the Montgomery County Library District, and the Executive Director is also the District Administrator.

The successful candidate will build upon the Library’s historically strong service values and its commitment to exceeding community expectations with a respect for the Library’s history combined with thoughtful innovation. The Director will work collaboratively with the library board of directors, the library staff, the Montgomery County District Directors, and the public to communicate the Library’s mission and goals effectively.

Key initiatives: Include developing and implementing a new strategic plan; developing strong positive relationships with staff – fostering trust, integrity, respect, and teamwork; building positive partnerships with external stakeholders – the officials of Montgomery County, State and Local Legislators, local and regional organizations, the boards and directors of Montgomery County Libraries, the Friends of the Library, and the Norristown community at large; and charting a clear course for welcoming and inclusive library programs and services.  Collaborates with four unique branch advisory boards and coordinates county-wide services via the bookmobiles.

Our Location: Norristown is the County Seat of Montgomery County and is located near Philadelphia in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the nine-member governing Board of Directors, the Library Director plans, coordinates, administers, and directs the operations of the Library, including but not limited to recruiting, hiring, coaching, and mentoring staff; leading all human resources functions; fiscal management and oversight; and representing the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library as the public face of the Library. Coordinates main library facilities maintenance with the Montgomery County Public Property Department. The Director works closely with staff to support the Library’s core values supporting the Library’s strategic goals. The Director is expected to be an effective advocate, a collaborative partner with all stakeholders, and to bring innovative and creative solutions that serve to fulfill the Library’s mission. As the District Administrator for Montgomery County, the Director works collaboratively with the District Consultant and the Directors of the 20 District Libraries.

Qualifications: Minimum requirements include twelve years of professional library experience with at least five years of senior level administrator experience. A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program is required. Public Library Director experience is preferred. Must have successful experience working directly with a library board of directors. Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process. Essential attributes include personal integrity, interpersonal and consensus-building skills, and experience with fiscal oversight and budgeting. A thorough knowledge of current library trends, technologies, and “best practices” is highly desirable.

Compensation: This is a salaried exempt position with a 40-hour work week. The full-time salary starts at $100,000, depending upon experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits including health insurance and four weeks of vacation.
