Questions Tracking
Recording Questions Asked
The lab is making a concerted effort going forward to more accurately tally the number of questions we handle each day. To that end we are asking volunteers to continue to help us keep these records. Specifically, we are asking volunteers to monitor staff interaction with patrons, either at patron work stations or their own desks, and mark one hash mark for each encounter. After each patron interaction the staff member will let the volunteer know whether to add any more hash marks to that encounter. If the staff member gets distracted or forgets, please follow up and ask us. Thank you so much for your efforts in support of the Computer Lab!!
Desk Items
Lending Desk Items to Patrons
Patrons occasionally ask to borrow a stapler, white out or scissors, even our hole puncher. This if fine as long as they use them in the lab or just outside the lab at the waist-high bookshelf. Keep a sharp eye out that they do not "travel" anywhere else. Scissors are especially an issue because patrons have been known to use them to cut up books.
Supplies
Giving Supplies to Patrons
We have small pieces of paper and "golf" pencils available for patrons to use and take with them. If a patron wants a full-size sheet of paper, there is a supply in the rack next to the printer. It will have printing on the other side. We cannot afford to supply blank printer paper to a patron. The occasional paper clip is fine.
Handicapped PCs
Computers 15 and 16
If a patron wants to sit at 15 or 16, tell them that we reserve these computers for people with mobility issues (for example, people with canes, crutches, or wheelchairs). Try to avoid the use of the term "handicapped", as there are many different types of handicaps. If they insist on sitting at one of the computers, let them know that they can sit there, but if someone with mobility issues comes in, they will have to vacate their computer.
Email Block
Sending Email over Library Wi-Fi
Occasionally, a patron will report having trouble accessing their email over the library's wifi network. This is because the library's wifi blocks email programs such as Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail. Patrons should have no trouble accessing their email through a web browser.
Monitor
Position of Monitors
Monitors have to face frontways always because we in the Lab need to be able to see them well enough to assure proper adherance to our Internet Guidelines. If you see a turned monitor please alert a lab staff member.
Buddy
Buddy Program
There is a new program on this computer which network authorities will use to communicate with lab staff. If you see a window pop up that looks like this please alert staff.

Occasionally, clicking the In Library Use link to the Inquirer Archives on our website launches a prompt for authenication. This shouldn't happen, but when it does, enter norristown for both the username and the password.
