COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions


​For the health and safety of our community and staff, and as directed by the PA Department of Education Office of Commonwealth Libraries, the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library is now closed until further notice.

I have materials currently checked out, what do I do?
Patrons who have library materials checked out will not incur fines. We ask that you keep it with you until the library reopens. You may email inquiries or questions to Asha Verma, Head of Readers’ Services at

I don’t have a library card. Can I get one?
Yes! You can get a temporary card here: Get a Card

Can I renew an expired library card during the closure?
Yes, you can. You would need to submit an online application for a temporary card by clicking here. During this application process, a search is first done for an existing card. If found, your existing card will be renewed and you will be contacted by email to confirm this.

What do I do if I get an “expired card” error when trying to access my library account or e-resources?

Can I place an item on hold? What happens to my existing holds?
We are not currently accepting holds. Once we open, holds will resume being filled in the order they were received. Your place in line for pre-existing holds will not change.

I don’t have a card. Can I still get ebooks?
Yes! If you do not have a library card, you can get an Instant Digital Card through OverDrive using your cell phone number. This digital card will give you immediate access to ebooks and audiobooks. Please note that this card number is just for OverDrive and will not work for other databases.

To sign up, go to Overdrive or the OverDrive app, and choose “Sign up for an instant digital card.” Or select “Sign in,” then follow the directions to get a free card instantly.

What about Magazines? Can I read them online?
Yes! Read magazines and comics from home even if you don’t have a library card! RBDigital is allowing you to register from home for a limited time only.

Go here, RBDigital -If you do have a library card, just go ahead and use your card number to register. If you don’t have one, put this number 17942020 in the space for Access Code on the Registration form. Read and enjoy!

Can I get on Ancestry from home while the library is closed?
Yes! Use your library card to research your past from home through May 31, 2020! The ProQuest Company is generously allowing our library cardholders temporary in-home access to the Ancestry Library Edition database. If you don’t have a library card, click here to request one online. To access Ancestry: Sign into your library account, click Search, click E-Sources, and then click Ancestry.

Can I use Power Library resources without having a library card?
Yes! Go to Power Library and fill out the form.

The kids are home ALL the time. Can you help?
The Children’s Librarians in Montgomery County have started a YouTube channel where they are posting Story times and other activities. You can also entertain kids with the storybooks, videos, games, and puzzles from Tumblebooks Bookflix and Trueflix. Find these resources here: Children’s homepage.

I have a research question. Can I talk to a librarian now?
Yes! For general reference and informational questions… visit online with a 24/7 reference librarian by using the Chat With a Librarian national online reference service.
