On March 17, 1978, a Federal judge ordered that the notorious Pennhurst institution close, allowing the 1,156 residents a chance to live in a small, family-like setting in a regular neighborhood. What really happened to them? Were they really better off? A team of Sociologists from Temple University spent more than a decade conducting yearly visits with all of the individuals and their families to answer this very question, with shocking and gratifying results.
